Brandon Scherff is on board for the Washington Redskins in 2020. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the three-time Pro Bowl right guard will sign his franchise tender that will pay him a guaranteed $15.03 million for the season.
By signing the franchise tender, Scherff will be required to report to all mandatory off-season workouts and training camp. When or if there is a training camp is up in the air due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Scherff and the Redskins still have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term extension. If no deal is reach.
The Redskins placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Scherff. A standard practice to lower the obligated salary. Scherff was technically free to negotiate and sign an offer sheet with another team. However, with the price of two first-round draft picks, the likelihood of that occurring with minimal to none.
Washington drafted Scherff with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. He has been the starting right guard since Day 1. Scherff had not missed a start for the first 38 games, however, injuries have ended his season prematurely in each of the past seasons.
In 2018, a torn pectoral forced him to miss eight games. Last season, elbow and shoulder injuries had him miss five games.
Bringing back Scherff helps secure the Redskins’ right side of the offensive line. That’s imperative as they have questions at left guard following the departure of Ereck Flowers. Left tackle is also a major concern as the team has attempted to trade the disgruntled Trent Williams.
