Brandon Scherff is glad to be back with the Washington Redskins. The three-time Pro Bowl right guard recently signed his franchise tender that will pay him $15.03 million for next season.
“I’m excited,” Scherff said, via Redskins.com. “I’m still living out this dream, and I’m just glad I’m back with the Redskins again.”
The Redskins did make much of a splash in free agency, but they accomplished one of their top priorities in bringing back Scherff.
However, Scherff wants a long-term deal to ensure his stay with the Redskins is more permanent. The two sides have until July 15 to hammer out a long-term deal or Scherff will be back in the same situation next off-season, heading to free agency or being subject to another franchise tag.
“It’s gone well,” Scherff said about the on-going contract talks. “Just pretty much sat down and talked to my agent — that’s what he’s there for — and I want to sign a long-term deal with them, too. I love it there, and I’ve always said I wanted to be a Redskin for the rest of my career. So, hopefully, we can work towards that.”
In his first five seasons Scherff has been viewed as one of the best offensive guards in the NFL. Locking him up for a lengthy period of time will prevent the Redskins from adding to an already long list of team needs.
Scherff was named to his third Pro Bowl despite missing five games with knee and shoulder injuries. It was his second straight season cut short due to injury. Still, he has been dominant when in action.
He wants to stay with the Redskins for the rest of his career, and the Redskins would like that as well. He is the last top-10 pick from the 2015 NFL Draft still with the team that drafted him. Hopefully, an announcement ahead of the deadline will keep it that way beyond this upcoming season.
