REPORT: Redskins would consider high draft pick in 2021 for Trent Williams

The Washington Redskins have been unable to find a suitable offer for disgruntled left tackle Trent Williams, as the 2020 NFL Draft is less than one week away. Thus, the Redskins may consider seeking a higher draft pick in next year’s draft as another option, according to Julie Donaldson of NBC Sports Washington.

Washington granted Williams permission to seek a trade, as the seven-time Pro Bowl tackle demanded a trade or release. However, the Redskins have not landed a suitable offer through the past four months.

Williams’ agent, Vincent Taylor, has been publicly vocal about the Redskins dragging their feet in negotiations with prospective suitors. He stated a release may be best.

Yet, the Redskins aren’t going to release Williams. And there is little to no chance Williams would return under contract.

What may be complicating matters is the fact Williams wants a new long-term deal with his new team. He is set to enter the 2020 season on the final year of a five-year deal.

Washington has reportedly sought a second-round pick for Williams. But they have no suitors for that asking price. As the draft vastly approaches there is hope offer values increase. If not, the Redskins could consider a higher pick in 2021’s draft.

However, if a team isn’t willing to offer a high pick in this year’s draft, what are the odds they’d offer something high for next year’s?

That’s the dilemma the Redskins will have to figure out. Is it more worth holding on for Williams for the right price or just cutting ties and moving on from the headache?
