Redskins sign CB Aaron Colvin

Cornerback Aaron Colvin is doing another round with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins announced Thursday they have signed the veteran. No terms of the deal were disclosed.

Colvin, 28, is looking to revise his career after struggling the previous two seasons. He emerged with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a fourth-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Playing alongside stud corners Jalen Ramsey and AJ Bouye, Colvin showed promise as a primary slot corner, enough to earn him a three-year, $34 million in free agency with the Houston Texans in 2018.

However, his time in Houston was dismal. He was thrust to outside cornerback due to injuries in the Texans’ secondary. He struggled on the field and with an ankle injury his first season there. He then struggled mightily in the 2019 season opener against the New Orleans Saints, including giving up a critical catch to Ted Ginn Jr that setup the game-winning field goal.

The Texans released Colvin following that game and he ultimately signed a one-year deal with the Redskins. He was inactive for much of the season before playing six games and starting two with the Redskins. Despite the limited play, Colvin allowed 22 catches on 25 targets.

Colvin has a lot prove to re-establish his NFL career. His signing fits with majority of the Redskins’ signings this offseason. They’ve opted for one-year deal with players looking to prove their value or if they can still play in the league much like fellow cornerback Ronald Darby.

Colvin will join a cornerback group that will feature Kendall Fuller, who inked a four-year, $40 million deal with Washington this offseason. Fabian Moreau and Jimmy Moreland are also strong candidates to be in Washington’s rotation. Colvin will have to prove himself along with Darby against the three younger talents to carve out a role in Jack Del Rio’s defense.
