Adrian Peterson and Trent Williams are close friends. So, it’s understandable the Washington Redskins running back didn’t agree with Williams being traded to the San Francisco 49ers during last month’s NFL Draft. Especially, considering what Washington received in return, as they settled for a 2020 fifth-round pick and 2021 third-round pick.
Yes, Williams was considered one of the elite offensive linemen in the NFL. However, the Redskins’ hands were tied as they wanted to resolve the longstanding rift with the seven-time pro bowler.
Williams and the Redskins remained at odds for more than a year, starting in the offseason of 2019. Initially, the rift was caused by Williams feeling the training staff misdiagnosed a growth on his scalp which proved to be cancerous. The growth had to surgically removed.
The rift ultimately spilled into a contract holdout and a request to be traded by Williams. Even the hiring of head coach Ron Rivera and owner Dan Snyder cleaning house of the front office, including longtime team president Bruce Allen and head trainer Larry Hess failed to resolve issues between Williams and the team.
After Williams’ agent, Vincent Taylor, publicly criticized the Redskins’ handling of the situation, a trade was inevitable.
At this junction of Peterson’s career, the 2012 NFL MVP, would like the best chance to finish his career on a high note. Losing Williams not only diminished the chances for Peterson but signifies the Redskins’ rebuild.
