Landon Collins calls Redskins coaching change ‘Much needed’

Washington Redskins safety Landon Collins is excited about the team’s recent coaching change. The Redskins hired Ron Rivera to be their head coach. Then, hired Jack Del Rio as defensive coordinator.

NFL teams have been unable to convene with OTA practices and working at the team’s facilities. However, there is a different atmosphere surrounding the Redskins, even in a rebound year, especially on defense.

In his first season with the Redskins, Collins had to play under a lameduck head coach in Jay Gruden. His defensive coordinator Greg Manusky had his fair share of shortcomings with his unpopular defensive scheme.

Collins spoke to local reporters earlier this week via a Zoom video conference. The Redskins safety expressed his excitement about the changes.

“It feels different because of the coaching staff. They changed the whole coaching staff, they switched the defense around. I can’t speak offensively, but defensively, it was much needed.”

Both Rivera and Del Rio are respected for their coaching abilities. Combined they are certainly to change the attitude of Washington’s defense. The team is moving to a 4-3 base defense, which will allow more freedom. Additionally, players like Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat will get the opportunity to play at more natural positions such as defensive end.

“These are coaches that have great coaching backgrounds and made a killing with their team,” Collins added. “From that standpoint, I’m just looking at it as it’s going to be the same way.”
