A name change for the Washington Redskins appears imminent. However, the franchise is not planning planning to use any Native American imagery in the new nickname, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
John Keim of ESPN added the team still plans retain the burgundy and gold color scheme.
Last week, the Redskins announced the team will conduct a “thorough review” of the nickname after multiple sponsors threatened to cut ties from the team. Nike, FedEx, and Pepsi Co. led the charge but others have since followed.
āThis process allows the team to take into account not only the proud tradition and history of the franchise but also input from our alumni, the organization, sponsors, the National Football League and the local community it is proud to represent on and off the field,ā owner Dan Snyder said in the statement.
Head coach Ron Rivera said in his initial statement, the team wants to “make sure we continue the mission of honoring and supporting Native Americans and our Military.”
Warriors, Red Wolves, RedHawks, RedTails and Redspears have been a few of the more popular names to surfaced among fans and media publicly. Some of those names may be eliminated of consideration with discussions leaning towards dropping reference to the Native Americans,
