Report: Redskins expected to retire nickname Monday

Washington is expected to retire the “Washington Redskins” name Monday, according to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal.

The concluded it’s “thorough review” of the Redskins name. Thus, they want eliminate any doubts the team’s name is changing. However, the new name won’t be announced immediately. There are still trademark issues pending, according to Fischer.

Pressure mounted to change the team’s name when a number of sponsors asks for a name change. FedEx, who owns naming rights to Washington’s home stadium, formally asked first on July 2. Nike followed suit, pulling the team’s merchandise and removing the name from its website.

Washington announced plans to review the name on July 3. FedEx later threatened to remove all of the company’s signage from FedEx Field by 2021.

Now fans will be anticipating the new name with the name change certain. The name “Red Wolves” has emerged as a fan-favorite. Others have mentioned Warriors, a seamless transition from its soon-to-be retired name. Yet, reports have suggested the team will move away from a Native American imagery.
