Reddit user Staticrush sent Washington Football fans and media into hysteria, especially on Twitter, over a potential leak to the team’s new name. How about DC Sentinels?
With a bit of investigative work, Staticrush linked the domain registry of DCSentinels.com to Redskins.com, as pointed out by Chad Ryan of Capital Connection.
But no fear for Washington fans who are not feeling DC Sentinels. ESPN’s John Keim eased their minds, clarifying Sentinels is not a potential name for Washington.
This would have gone against what majority of Washington fans wanted. “Red Wolves” has emerged as the favorite name suggestion of fans. Current players such as Derrius Guice, Dwayne Haskins and Jonathan Allen have endorsed the “Red Wolves” name. Thus, DC Sentinels would’ve been a huge disappointment.
Keim noted he reached out to his sources after the name suggestion overtook Washington Football Twitter.
Before Keim’s clarification, comments over social media pointed to the Sentinels being name of featured team in the movie The Replacements starring Keanu Reeves. The movie was inspired by the replacement players of the Washington Football team in 1987 during the NFL strike. Others pointed to a link to DC Comics characters “The Sentinels.”
The XFL also had a trademark claim to DC Sentinels before opting for DC Defenders.
Speculation of the new name has grown ever since Washington announced the retirement of the “Redskins” name and logo. Fans have scoped trademark registrations of potential names. Every name suggestion has garnered media attention. Trademark Squatter, Philip Martin McCauley, has been featured in numerous articles around the internet, because he sits on potential trademarks.
Sentinels may be ruled out, but the speculation and trademark searching won’t stop until Washington makes an official announcement of the new name.
