Charles Mann played 11 years for the Burgundy and Gold of Washington. His 82 sacks in a Washington uniform is third all-time in franchise history. Mann approved of the pending name change, viewing the Redskins name as an injustice to Native Americans.
Yet, he draws the line about changing the team’s colors.
Speaking on Grant & Danny of 106.7 the Fan, Mann said Washington “better not” change the colors from Burgundy and Gold.
“That would be a travesty. I feel like you’re disrupting the franchise. Changing the nickname is one thing but changing the colors would be devastating. You definitely need to keep the burgundy and gold.”
Mann said per Grant Paulsen
The team’s new name will reportedly not included Native American imagery. However, for now, Washington plans to keep their traditional burgundy and gold colors.
Most fans have accepted the name change with Red Wolves emerging as a fan-favorite. Those fans would like the term “Red” kept in the new name. That’s largely to keep the team’s traditional colors as well as the popular #HTTR.
Keeping the colors the same will be a last connection for a generation of fans to Washington’s memorable past to their glory days. It’s a memorable past that Mann helped shape. It’s a connection Mann doesn’t want to see go.
