The Redskins name and logo have officially been retired. The franchise will go by the name of “Washington Football Team” for the 2020 season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
The temporary name makes a lot of sense given the short time frame ahead of next week’s start of training camp. The process of a logo, uniform and re-branding takes a lot longer than four weeks, the time Washington allotted itself since announcing intentions of reviewing their former name.
Schefter added Washington will continue the process of retiring the Redskins name on physical and digital spaces by their Sept. 13 season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
As for the permanent name?
The team intends to seek feedback from players, alumni, fans sponsors and the community for the new name, according to Schefter.
It’s no secret the majority of Washington Football Team’s fans want the team to be renamed the Red Wolves in the future. A number of current and past players have been supportive of Red Wolves. However, there could be legal hurdles if the organization wants to settle on the name.
Thanks to a particular trademark squatter and other entities, there may be similar challenges with any other name they prefer.
Not committing to a name now allows the team to overcome any hurdles they may face with any name of choosing. But for 2020 season, the team will be known as the Washington Football Team.
