Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez express his concerns over the latest Miami Marlins’ COVID-19 outbreak. At least 14 Miami players have tested positive of coronavirus. The outbreak forced Major League Baseball to cancel the Marlins’ season opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
The Philadelphia Phillies-New York Yankees series opener was postponed. The Phillies played the Marlins in Philadelphia over the weekend.
As MLB continues to sort out the situation, the Nationals are pegged to travel to Miami for a three-game series this weekend.
Martinez admitted his level of concern “went from a level of 8 to 12.”
Martinez, who battled a heart issue last September, added, “I’ll be honest with you, I’m scared. I really am.”
Martinez later said, “Hopefully they make the right decision. That’s all I’m going to say.”
Martinez shares the concerns of many other Americans. The coronavirus pandemic has swept through the nation. MLB returned last week, as the number of positive coronavirus tests and COVID-19 related deaths increase.
The Nationals have faced the situation first-hand, as star player Juan Soto tested positive for COVID-19. He is being quarantined and needs to have two negative tests before he is allowed to return to the team.
Baseball appears to be moving forward outside of the Marlins, who remain in Philadelphia. The Nationals lost to Toronto Monday night. Other games played as well, but while MLB hopes to move on, Martinez and many more around baseball are focused on the Marlins.
