Derrius Guice is a free agent, free to sign with any team in the NFL. The former Washington running back went unclaimed on waivers Sunday. The Washington Football Team waived Guice Friday evening following his arrest for domestic violence related charges.
Washington drafted Guice in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of LSU despite concerns both medically and character-wise. He was expected to be the featured back of the future for Washington. But, he only appeared in five games in his two seasons with the team.
In 2018, he suffered a torn ACL in his first preseason game, wiping out his rookie season. He was limited to five games in 2019 due to two knee injuries.
Despite being cleared to play this season, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Guice suffered another knee injury during the first week of training camp prior to his arrest.
So it comes as no surprise no other team would claim the remainder of his rookie deal. Not with him facing legal issues and a potential suspension from the league at some point.
Guice’s attorney, Peter Greenspun, released a statement late Friday, denying the domestic violence allegations. Greenspun also criticized the Loudoun County Sheriff Department as well as the Washington Football Team for their hasty release of Guice.
