Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg didn’t pitch today. Yet, he earned a rare ejection from the stands during Thursday’s matinee against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
Home plate umpire Carlos Torres was brutal with the calls and strikes early on in the game, drawing the ire of Nationals manager Dave Martinez and the Nationals’ dugout. After Austin Voth didn’t the strike three call from Torres, Strasburg couldn’t hold back his frustration.
During the ordeal, cameras picked up a NSFW comment directed towards Torres.
Once it was clear who Torres had thrown out the game, Strasburg stood up, tipped his cap and walked away from the stands.
Ironically, Voth got the strike three call against Mets’ Pete Alonzo on the next pitch. The pitch was nearly an identical spot as the previous pitch.
Coincidentally, Strasburg isn’t the first player to be ejected from the stands this season. Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Derek Holland holds that honor.
