Washington Wizards general manager Tommy Sheppard confirmed re-signing Davis Bertans this off-season is a priority, according to Fred Katz of the Athletic.
Bertans, who will be an unrestricted free agent on Oct. 18, is expected to receive a lucrative pay increase from the $7 million he made this season in free agency.
Washington acquired Bertans in a trade last summer from San Antonio. The Latvia native blossomed in his lone season with the Wizards. He averaged career highs of 15.4 points and 4.5 rebounds. The sharpshooter shot 43.4% from the field, including a team-high 42.4% from three and 85.2% from the free throw line.
Bertans opted out of playing during the NBA restart in Orlando over fears of being injured ahead of free agency looming. He tore his ACL in his right knee twice before entering the NBA in 2016.
After a season of rebuilding, the Wizards plan to progress back into contention next season. John Wall returning from a torn Achilles heel, re-signing Bertans and having a lottery pick in this year’s NBA Draft are at the top of their plan this off-season.
