The Washington Nationals have placed left-handed pitcher Seth Romero on the 10-day injured list with a broken right hand. Nationals manager Dave Martinez said the injury occurred Saturday when Romero slipped on stairs and used his right hand to break his fall, according to Jesse Doughtery of the Washington Post.
Romero reported to the team Sunday with his hand swollen.
āI feel bad for the kid, ācause he worked diligently to get here,ā Martinez said per Mark Zuckerman of MASN Sports. āHeās young, and heās a big part of our future. ā¦ Hopefully, this is just a minor setback for him, and as soon as he heals, weāll get him back here.ā
Washington has recalled left-handed pitcher Ben Braymer to replace Romero on the active roster.
Romero appeared in three games this season, posting a 13.50 ERA in 2.2 innings for the Nationals.
The latest injury adds to the series of events of Romero’s young and rocky MLB career. He was dismissed from the University of Houston in 2017 following multiple team violations. The Nationals drafted him in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft.
In 2018, Romero got sent home by the Nationals from his first spring training after violating curfew multiple times. He returned but tore ligaments in his elbow, requiring him to undergo Tommy John surgery. He missed all of the 2019 season.
