The Washington Football Team defense will operate out of the 4-3 base defense in 2020. Defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio wants a more aggressive front-seven, attacking the line of scrimmage with the defensive line while the linebackers roam to clean up. The difference in schemes will be an adjustment for defensive tackle Daron Payne.
Payne played in the 3-4 three seasons at Alabama and his first two seasons in Washington. Now, he has to adjust. Following Sunday’s practice, Payne said he is “embracing” the new style of play, according to John Keim of ESPN.
“Instead of being more head up and playing the 2-gap, I’m taking vertical steps up the field and be more explosive and get to my pass rush more. Like it? I just like playing football. This is a new style for me and I’m embracing it.”
Payne has been used to clogging two gaps, but now he can attack the football against the run and pass. He is expected to start alongside a talented defensive line that is being recognized as potentially one of the best in the NFL.
With Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis and Tim Settle, Payne is part of a quartet with supreme talent whom can control the line scrimmage inside. Washington has an equally talented quartet on the edge with Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Ryan Kerrigan and Ryan Anderson.
Payne had two sacks last season, a number expected to increase this season. Washington’s new defensive philosophy will create more opportunities for Payne and his D-line mates to get after the football. It’s an adjustment for them now, but once comfortable, could transform the defense for the better.
