The Washington Football Team is moving on from running back Adrian Peterson. The team announced Peterson’s release.
Peterson joined Washington in 2018 after injuries savaged through the running back room. He went on to lead the team in rushing in 2018 and 2019, totaling 1,940 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.
Despite the impressive numbers, Peterson just didn’t fit the offense of incoming offensive coordinator Scott Turner. Rookie running back Antonio Gibson has been impressive in training camp. A college wide receiver converted into running back, Gibson opens up Turner’s offense in ways Peterson couldn’t.
Last week, head coach Ron Rivera acknowledged Washington had a “secret” plan for Gibson within the offense. He has been compared to Christian McCaffrey, who RIvera and Turner coached in Carolina.
Additionally, Washington has JD McKissic another pass-catching runner and the returning Bryce Love, who is more dynamic.
At the age of 35 Peterson comes at a crossroad in his career. Peterson, who entered the league in 2007, is fifth in the NFL all-time in rushing yards with 14,216. He had recently spoke of wanting to stay with Washington several more seasons in an attempt to surpass Emmitt Smith for the most rushing yards in league history. However, his power-running style is hard to fit in today’s more open and pass-first offenses.
For Washington, youth and scheme fit is at the forefront. Gibson and McKissic were simply younger and better fits.
