Sean Davis is returning to where his NFL career starter. The safety signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Davis was a second-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2016 out of Maryland. He spent four seasons in Pittsburgh and appeared in 48 games, starting in 41.
A Washington, DC native, Davis signed a one-year deal with the Washington Football Team in March. He received a $2 million signing bonus and was slated to be Washington’s new starting free safety.
However, when training camp started, third-year pro Troy Apke emerged as the top free safety. Rookie Kamren Curl also impressed throughout camp. With Landon Collins locked at strong safety and Deshazor Everett established on special teams, Washington cut Davis six months after signing him.
Davis will now return to familiar grounds rejoining the Steelers and defensive coordinator Keith Butler. He will replace Curtis Riley on Pittsburgh’s 53-man roster, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Davis will have the opportunity to slot in as the Steelers’ third safety behind starters Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds.
