The Washington Football worked out former kicker Brett Maher, according to NFL’s transaction wire (h/t Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post).
Maher was released by the New York Jets on Aug. 31. He spent the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
Dustin Hopkins is set as Washington place kicker. However, considering concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic, having a backup plan at kicker is ideal.
Washington does have one roster spot available on their practice squad. Perhaps that spot may be reserved to stash away a backup kicker?
Last season, Maher struggled with the Cowboys, making a subpar 66.7% of his field goals. He was 1-of-5 on field goal attempts between 40 and 49 yards and 4-of-8 on kicks 50 yards or more. Dallas released him in December.
Maher spent this year’s training camp with the Jets. But, he was cut after losing out the kicker competition to Sam Ficken.
