Alex Smith, Bryce Love, Lane Johnson headline inactives for Washington vs. Eagles

Quarterback Alex Smith, running back Bryce Love and cornerback Kendall Fuller headline the inactives for the Washington Football Team in Week 1’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With Smith out, Kyle Allen will serve as Washington’s backup quarterback to Dwayne Haskins. Smith has attempted to comeback from the devastating leg injury he suffered in November 2018. Making the 53-man roster after 17 surgeries and nearly having his leg amputated is a huge comeback story in itself.

Love missed his rookie season last year while recovering from a torn ACL he suffered in his final college game at Stanford. He is considered a long-term investment for Washington but with rookie Antonio Gibson, JD McKissic and Peyton Barber ahead of him on the depth chart, Love won’t dress in today’s game.

Fuller is out with a knee injury he suffered in training camp. He signed a four-year, $40 million deal this off-season to become Washington’s top cornerback. With Fuller out, Ronald Darby is expected to be the lead cornerback with Jimmy Moreland and Fabian Moreau rounding out the top three.

Meanwhile, the Eagles will be without their starting right tackle Lane Johnson. Johnson is nursing an ankle injury. He attempted to give it a try to help anchor Philadelphia’s offensive line, but will be held out.

Rookie Jack Driscoll will start in Johnson’s place at right tackle. Driscoll will line up next to second-year pro Nate Herbig, who will start at right guard with Brandon Brooks out for the season with a Achilles injury.

The Eagles will be down two Pro Bowlers on the right side of their offensive line against a highly-touted Washington defensive line that will feature Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Jonathan Allen, Matt Ioannidis and Daron Payne.

Philadelphia will also be without wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (foot) and running back Miles Sanders (hamstring). Second-round pick quarterback Jalen Hurts is also inactive.
