Washington signs two to practice squad; releases TE Hale Hentges, WR Shelton Gibson

The Washington Football Team has signed speedy wide receiver Jeff Badet and tight end Temarrick Hemingway to their practice squad. They are releasing tight end Hale Hentges and wide receiver Shelton Gibson in corresponding moves.

The most notable name is Hentges. He appeared in 11 games last season with Washington, playing 230 offensive snaps. With the coaching change to Ron Rivera this year, Hentges was a dark horse in Washington’s tight end competition entering training camp.

However, he fell behind Logan Thomas, Marcus Baugh and Jeremy Sprinkle. Hentges was released during final cuts and signed to Washington’s practice squad. One week into the season, Washington is moving on from Hentges in favor of Hemingway.

Reports surfaced Wednesday of Washington signing Hemingway. He was a sixth-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2016. He has appeared in 13 games throughout his career with the Rams and Denver Broncos, playing mostly special teams. Hemingway was released by the Carolina Panthers during final cuts on Sept. 5. He spent last season on the Panthers practice squad under Rivera.

Listed at 5-foot-11, 182 pounds Badet has blazing speed. He ran a 4.27 40-yard dash during the 2018 NFL Combine. Undrafted, he spent 2018 on the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. He was the fourth overall pick in the 2020 XFL Draft by the Dallas Renegades. He had 16 catches and 108 yards before the XFL season was suspended.

Badet joins fellow wide receivers Cam Sims and Tony Brown on Washington’s practice squad.
