Washington places Brandon Scherff on IR, promotes Cam Sims from practice squad

The Washington Football Team has placed right guard Brandon Scherff on injured reserve with a knee injury. Wide receiver Cam Sims is being elevated to the active roster in a corresponding move.

Scherff is reportedly expected to be out 3-5 weeks with a sprained MCL. He suffered the injury in Sunday’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals when a Cardinals pass rusher was blocked into his leg.

Scherff will be eligible to be activated from the IR after three weeks, per CBA rules for the COVID-19 impacted 2020 season.

This will be the third elevation for Sims from the practice squad this season. He was promoted in each of the first two weeks of the season. Under the CBA, NFL teams are allowed to promote up to two players for each game without adding them to the 53-man active roster.

However, each player is allowed two such elevations in the season. With Sims’ two elevations maxed out in as many weeks, Washington had to add him to the 53-man roster. Scherff’s IR placement opened a roster spot for Sims.

Sims has been a key contributor on special teams, especially on punt coverage. He’s played on 36 special teams snaps through the first two games.
