Washington rookie offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles has yet to be active this season. The former LSU product has dealt with a leg injury throughout training camp. In Week 1, he appeared on the injury report but came off last week in preparation for the Arizona Cardinals but was still inactive for the game.
This week, he appeared back on the injury report and did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. Head coach Ron Rivera told reporters, Charles had a “a little bit of a setback.”
Washington drafted Charles in the fourth-round of this year’s draft with hopes of him someday settling in at left tackle, replacing the since traded Trent Williams. Instead, he has been trying to get his feet wet in the NFL while battling through a nagging injury.
Meanwhile, Washington has had to rely on third-year pro and first-time starter Geron Christian. Christian has struggled mightily protecting the blindside of quarterback Dwayne Haskins. Entering Week 3, his 55.2 overall grade by Pro Football Focus is ranked 67th among 71 qualified offensive tackles.
If Charles is to be the savior at left tackle, Washington will have to wait a bit longer on his health to improve before the changing of the guard.
