Broncos starting QB Brett Rypien, Mark Rypien’s nephew, vs. Jets

Former Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien will get his first NFL start. Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio, naming Rypien the starting quarterback for Thursday night’s game against the New York Jets. Brett is the nephew of Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien.

Mark Rypien guided the Washington Football Team on arguably one of the greatest Super Bowl runs ever. Washington started the year 11-0 and dominated its way to the Super Bowl following the 1991 season against the Buffalo Bills.

Brett Rypien had impressive collegiate career at Boise State. He was a three-time first-team All-Mountain West Conference. Despite the success, he went undrafted in 2019 landing with the Broncos where he spent his first year on practice squad. He started this season on the practice squad but a shoulder injury to Drew Lock elevated him to the 53-man roster.

Rypien becomes Denver’s fifth starter since the start of the 2019 season. He replaced Jeff Driskel in the second half last Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He completed 8-of-9 passes for 53 yards. His lone incomplete pass was an interception
