Eagles sign Hakeem Butler as a tight end

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed Hakeem Butler from the Carolina Panthers practice squad, and moving the 6-foot-5, 227-pounder to tight end.

The Eagles placed tight end Dallas Goedert on injured reserve an ankle injury.

As a wide receiver, Butler was a 2019 fourth-round pick of the Arizona Cardinals. However, a broken hand landed him on injured reserve his rookie season. He returned for this year’s training camp, but the Cardinals released him during final cuts.

Butler went through a number of workouts following his release, including with the Washington Football Team. With a lack of depth at wide receiver beyond top wide out Terry McLaurin, many Washington fans yearned for the signing of Butler. However, Washington opted not to sign him before he landed on the Panthers practice squad on Sept. 18.

Butler is expected to slot behind Zack Ertz and Richard Rodgers. Rodgers spent training camp with Washington.
