Capitals re-sign Brenden Dillon to four-year deal

The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Brenden Dillon to a four-year deal with an average annual value of $3.9 million, the team announced.

The Capitals acquired Dillon ahead of the 2020 trade deadline from the San Jose Sharks. Dillon was supposed to sure-up the team’s defense for a postseason run. However, Dillon went pointless in 10 games before the COVID-19 pandemic halted the season.

Inside the NHL Playoff bubble, Dillon had one assist and an even rating in eight games before Washington was eliminated in the first-round by the New York Islanders.

Despite the small sample size, the Capitals had re-signing Dillon as their top priority and were willing to move money around to fit him in their limited cap space.

In July, Dillon expressed his desire to re-sign with the Capitals, saying “I’m happy with being a Washington Capital.”

Re-signing him became more imperative after learning fellow defenseman Michal Kempny will be out 6-8 months after undergoing surgery for a torn Achilles tendon.

Here’s a breakdown of his contract, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun.

Dillon is expected to be on the Capitals’ first of second pairing next season. He has played in 598 career NHL games between Dallas, San Jose and the Capitals. He has 114 points with 92 assists during his career.
