Former New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist still wants to compete, and he could be doing so in a Washington Capitals uniform. According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Washington is the “clear frontrunner” to land Lundqvist on a bargain, short-term contract.
Although bought-out ex-NYR goalie Henrik Lundqvist is currently UFA, he cannot formalize an agreement until Friday. That said, the word on the street is that WSH is the clear frontrunner for the Kingās services on what would presumably be a short-term, bargain contract.

The Rangers bought out the final year of Lundqvist’s contract that carried an $8.5 million salary cap hit, making him an unrestricted free agent after 15 seasons in New York. The 38-year old tweeted “I still want to compete” indicting he isn’t retiring just yet.
With the impending departure of Braden Holtby, 23-year old Ilya Samsonov is expected to become the lead goaltender in Washington next season. Thus, the Capitals are in the market for a veteran not only to be a viable backup but also a mentor for the young netminder.
Lundqvist may be at the tail end of his career, but he is still a very capable goalie. He would be able to push Samsonov and provide Hall of Fame level expertise. Washington also provides him the opportunity to compete for the Stanley Cup that has eluded him throughout his otherwise stellar career.
Last season, Lundqvist had a .905 save percentage and 3.16 goals-against-average, both career-lows. However, his numbers were comparable to Holtby’s .897 save percentage and 3.11 GAA. And Lundvist will surely be a lot cheaper than the desired price tag Holtby will command in free agency. Not mention be willing to take a backseat role to Samsonov.
