Washington places WR Steven Sims on IR with toe injury

The Washington Football Team has placed wide receiver Steven Sims Jr. on injured reserve with a toe injury, the team announced. In a corresponding move, Washington has signed offensive guard Joshua Garnett from the practice squad to their 53-man active roster.

Washington also signed kicker Kaare Vedvik to the practice squad.

Sims has been dealing with the toe injury for the past few weeks. He was limited in Week 3’s loss to the Cleveland Browns and missed last week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. He hasn’t practice since the Browns game.

This season, Sims was looking to build on his breakout rookie season last year after going undrafted. However, he has been limited to six catches and 103 yards this year due to the injury. Now he will miss at least three more weeks before being eligible to return from IR.

Washington will turn to a pair of rookies to replace Sims while he is out. Undrafted rookie Isaiah Wright has flashed in two starts this season with eight catches for 44 yards. Fourth-round pick Antonio Gandy-Golden has yet to get acclimated in the offense through three games after returning from a concussion suffered in training camp.

Garnett had been elevated twice this season for depth at guard after Brandon Scherff was placed on IR with a sprained MCL. Garnett needed to be signed to the 53-man roster in order to be elevated a third time this season.

Signing Garnett also helps with another injury on the offensive line. Wes Schweitzer has been bothered with an elbow injury this week. Schweitzer started the previous two games at right guard in place of Scherff.
