For the first time since November 18, 2018 when he suffered a horrific leg injury, Alex Smith was back on the field taking a snap in a game Sunday. Smith was forced into action after Washington Football Team starting quarterback Kyle Allen was knocked out of the game with a helmet-to-helmet hit from Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Allen, who replaced Dwayne Haskins this week, scored a rushing touchdown on the opening drive. However, as Washington trailed 20-7 in the second quarter, Allen was hit running to the sideline.
While Allen is questionable to return with an arm injury, Smith replaced him.
Smith’s comeback is incredible after he suffered a compound fracture in his leg on sack against the Houston Texans nearly two years ago. As well-documented he underwent 17 surgeries to repair the injury and combat a series of life-threatening bacterial infections that also nearly caused his leg to be amputated.
After missing all of the 2019 season while rehabbing on the career-threatening injury, Smith returned to this year’s training camp, making the 53-man roster. He was inactive for the first four games, but was promoted to No. 2 quarterback following the benching of Haskins.
While Washington was hopeful Smith could eventually take over as starting quarterback, he has been thrust in to play due to Allen’s injury.
