Alex Smith says first hit since leg injury ‘felt good’

For the first time in 693 days, Alex Smith was in uniform. The Washington Football Team quarterback entered Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams as the backup for the first time this season. Before halftime he was thrust into the game after starter Kyle Allen was injured on a helmet-to-helmet hit.

Smith was on the same field that he suffered an horrific leg injury on a sack during a November 2018 game. The injury required 17 surgeries in large due to him developing sepsis, a life-threatening bacterial infection that nearly led to his leg being amputated.

On his first drive in nearly two years, Smith was sacked by Rams defensive end Aaron Donald. Smith said the his first hit “felt good” and was “nice to know” he was fine afterwards.

The rest of the day was frustrating for the veteran QB. He completed 9-of-17 passes for 37 yards and was sacked a total of six times by the Rams defense.

If there were any concerns about the health of his leg, it was somewhat subdued by withstanding so much pressure and hits during his first game back.

Still, Smith said the opportunity to be thrown in to was “almost a blessing” as he got to play without thinking.
