Ron Rivera said he has not given up on Dwayne Haskins. However, multiple people within the Washington Football Team organization believe the second-year quarterback will be traded by the Oct. 29 trade deadline, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.
The situation between the quarterback, who was drafted 15th overall just 16 months ago, and Rivera’s staff is already fairly toxic, and multiple sources within the organization believe a trade by the end of the month is the most likely outcome.
Haskins was benched and slotted as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart this week after starting the first four games of the season. Rivera has turned to third-year QB Kyle Allen, whom Washington traded a fifth-round draft pick for this off-season from the Carolina Panthers.
Allen had spent the previous two seasons under Rivera and current Washington offensive coordinator Scott Turner, making him an ideal fit. That’s something many believe Haskins never quite was. According to La Canfora, several sources close to Haskins has advised a trade would be best possible outcome for him, by going to a solid franchise with an experienced quarterback he can learn from.
In fact, other teams’ executives around the league have already started the process of evaluating film on Haskins for an impending trade.
Washington never seemed to be committed to Haskins in a way a team usually is to a first-round pick. He was drafted by lame duck coach Jay Gruden, who was not in favor of selection the former Ohio State QB.
After the firing of Gruden last season, Washington hired Rivera. Rivera brought in coaching staff mostly from the Panthers which was not high on Haskins during the draft process in 2019.
While Allen is now the starting quarterback, Washington is reportedly hopeful veteran Alex Smith will take over as starter in the coming weeks. Despite Rivera saying he is not done in Washington, it appears Haskins could be out of town by the end of the month.
