Washington right guard Brandon Scherff has been activated off injured reserve and will play Sunday against the New York Giants, the team announced.
Scherff missed three games after suffering a sprained MCL in Week 2 when an Arizona Cardinals defender was blocked into his leg by teammate right tackle Morgan Moses . Wes Schweitzer replace Scherff and played well in his absence.
Scherff, who is playing this season on a $15.03 million franchise tag, returned to practice this week as Washington activated the 21-day practice window. Three practices were all needed before activating him to the 53-man roster.
The return of the three-time pro bowler will surely be a boost for the struggling Washington offensive line. They rank last in the NFL with 3.5 yards per carry and second-to-last with 81.4 rushing yards per game. They also have allowed 14 sacks in the three games without Scherff.
In a corresponding move to make room for Scherff, Washington is placing cornerback Greg Stroman on injured reserve. Stroman suffered a foot injury in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens and missed last week’s game against the Los Angeles Rams.
