Friday, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed an executive order to allow fans at a 10% capacity to outdoor sporting events throughout the state. However, the Washington Football Team is “unlikely” to lift its ban at this point, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Washington announced in August fans would not be allowed to attend home games at the start of the regular season in large due to local guidelines during the coronavirus pandemic.
Their home stadium, FedEx Field, is located in Landover, Maryland in Prince George’s County. Earlier this month, Hogan said he was “in favor of safely trying to get some fans back in the stands.”
Washington did allow roughly 250 family and friends of players, coaches and staff members last Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. Washington is on the road this week at the New York Giants, but will return to FedEx Field in Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys. After a Week 8 bye, they’ll host the Giants in the team’s second meeting of the season.
The Baltimore Ravens, who also play in Maryland, have already taken the first steps in welcoming fans back into M&T Bank Stadium.
Prince George’s County has the most positive cases of any of the 24 jurisdictions in the state of Maryland with 31,367 cases, according to Maryland records. Baltimore has nearly less than half the amount of cases with 16,673.
