Washington OL Joshua Garnett retires at age 26

Washington offensive lineman Joshua Garnett has retired at the age of 26, the team announced.

Garnett was a first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He started 11 games as a rookie. However, injuries plagued him the following two seasons and the 49ers released him after training camp in 2019.

He sat out the 2019 season before signing with the Detroit Lions during this year’s virtual training camp. He signed with Washington in August.

Garnett was a late training camp add for Washington, but he got first-team reps as the team was searching for a suitable option at left guard. After being released during final cuts, he started the season on Washington’s practice squad and was elevated twice for game day before being added to the 53-man active roster ahead of Week 5.

An undisclosed illness kept him out of Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants. It’s unclear at the moment if the illness was related to him retiring.

Joshua Garnett appeared in 22 games in his career, including three with Washington this season.
