Taulia Tagovailoa starts at QB for Maryland

Taulia Tagovailoa got the start at quarterback for the Maryland Terrapins in their 2020 season opener against Northwestern. Maryland head coach Mike Locksley was mum chose Tagovailoa over redshirt-freshman Lance LeGendre.

Locksley was wouldn’t reveal who he named as the starting quarterback earlier this week heading into the game. He cited wanting a competitive advantage over Northwestern prior to the 7:30 pm kickoff.

Tagovailoa transferred from Alabama last May as he fell behind Mack Jones and Bryce Young following the departure of his older brother Tua Tagovailoa to the NFL.

Both Tagovailoa and LeGendre entered the season inexperienced. Tagovailoa appeared in three games as a freshman last year for Alabama, completing 9-of-12 passes in mop-up duty. LeGendre appeared in three games as well last year, attempting just three passes.

Tagovailoa came to Maryland to strengthen his resume in hopes of following his brother Tua to the NFL. His strong relationship with Locksley helped him choose the Terrapins. He’ll have a trio of weapons at wide receiver with Jeshaun Jones, Dontay Demus, Jr. and five-star freshman Rakim Jarrett.
