Washington Football Team quarterback Kyle Allen was carted off the field with a gruesome-looking ankle injury in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. However, the initial diagnosis may be better than the injury appeared to be.
X-rays at FedEx Field revealed Allen suffered a dislocated ankle and a small fracture. However, he may not need surgery depending on the results of an MRI on Monday, according to Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
The news is certainly encouraging compared to what was originally expected.
Allen suffered the injury when he was leg swept by Giants safety Jabrill Peppers. Peppers was flagged on the play.
Allen’s injury occurred nearly two years to the date when fellow Washington quarterback Alex Smith suffered a horrific leg injury on the same field. Smith took two years to recover after 17 surgeries. Coincidentally, Smith replaced Allen in the game Sunday, just his second game since his injury occurred in 2018.
Fortunately by the first word of Allen’s diagnosis, his injury is not nearly as severe. Now Washington will have to await the results of Monday’s MRI for confirmation and a timetable for Allen’s return.
