Washington Football Team quarterback Kyle Allen is expected to miss four months following ankle surgery, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Allen will be ready in time for the start of the 2021 season.
The news is better than feared. The timetable for his recovery was initially unclear, depending on if he would require surgery. Washington head coach Ron Rivera said Monday morning, it was “premature” to say Allen was done for the season, but his season appears to be done after all.
Allen suffered an ankle dislocation and fracture when New York Giants safety Jabrill Peppers leg-whipped Allen late in the first quarter of Sunday’s game. Allen was carted off the field.
Alex Smith will replace Allen as Washington’s starting quarterback moving forward, starting at the Detroit Lions next week. Smith will be making his first start since 2018 when he suffered a horrific leg injury that required 17 surgeries.
Washington acquired Allen in a trade for a fifth-round pick in the offseason from the Carolina Panthers. Allen played two seasons with the Panthers under Rivera and Washington offensive coordinator Scott Turner, starting 12 games in 2019.
Allen became Washington’s starting quarterback in Week 5 following the benching of Dwayne Haskins. He started four games, completing 69% of his passes along with four touchdowns and one interception before Sunday’s unfortunate injury.
He will be an exclusive rights free agent at the end of this season.
