The Washington Football Team is signing defensive back Cole Luke from the practice squad to the 53-man active roster, the team announced Saturday.
According to The Athletic’s Ben Standig, Luke has signed a two-year deal with no guaranteed money,
Luke, 25, had been on Washington’s practice squad since September. He had previously spent the past two seasons with the Carolina Panthers under then-head coach Ron Rivera, who is now Washington’s head coach, after going undrafted in 2017 out of Notre Dame. He appeared in eight games last season for Carolina.
Luke will get an opportunity to play at safety with the injuries to Landon Collins and now Deshazor Everett. Collins suffered a season-ending Achilles injury last month. Everett has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a high-ankle sprain. The timetable for his return remains unknown.
Rookie Kamren Curl has filled in at strong safety in place of Collins. However, with Everett out, Washington may be forced to turn back to Troy Apke, who was benched ahead of Week 6 in favor of Everett for poor play. Adding Luke gives the team insurance with his experience playing free safety.
