Alex Smith’s miraculous comeback from his horrific leg injury two years ago is an incredible story. It’s made him a strong candidate for NFL Comeback Player of the Year. However, given the gravity of his injury, there’s just as much concern from fans as there is excitement seeing the 36-year old back on the field.
Monday, Smith made his fourth start of the season for the Washington Football Team against the Pittsburgh Steelers. FOX Sports camera caught a view of Smith’s lower left leg gushing blood through his socks and onto his cleats.
It was a scene to cause great concern from viewers looking on. However, Smith seemed calmed. Washington’s trainers wrapped his sock area to help stop the blood just ahead of halftime. Fortunately, it was not his surgically repaired right leg that underwent 17 surgeries.
The cause of the massive bleeding was an inadvertent friendly fire, as Washington center Chase Rouiller spiked Smith’s leg with his cleat dropping back into pass protection.
Smith did not miss a snap despite the wound. That was a relief for multiple reasons, including Smith being Washington’s best option in their quarterback carousel this season. He has right the ship since taking over as starter following Kyle Allen’s season-ending ankle injury in Week 9.
