Monday, the Washington Football Team gave their fans something they’d been clamoring for more than 11 years. Against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington donned their all-white uniforms for the first time since Week 9 of the 2009 season.
Washington head coach Ron Rivera said he learned early on fans wanted the popular uniform combination. Yet, he was “looking for a big game” to wear them. Playing the previously undefeated Steelers certainly accounted for a big game.
Rivera added he told the staff to prepare the uniforms without telling the players, per Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.
Surely, there was an added excitement putting on the uniforms.
Washington wore the popular combo more than a decade ago when Sean Taylor, Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley and Santana Moss headed the core of the team.
Longtime team president Bruce Allen canned the look after his arrival to Washington in 2010. He preferred the more tradition uniform combos of the franchise. Following his dismissal this off-season, fans immediately campaigned for the all-whites to return.
Rivera made good by letting his team don the unis. Look good, play good, right? Washington went on to beat Pittsburgh 23-17, handing the Steelers their first defeat of the season.
