Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith is questionable to return after exiting the game shortly before halftime with a right calf injury.
With Washington leading the San Francisco 49ers 13-7 with just over a minute to play in the first half, Smith headed to the locker room with team trainers.
Smith took a third-down sack in the second quarter. He was then attended to by team doctors who were working on the surgically repaired right leg. He wears a special brace to aid with a drop foot he developed after undergoing 17 surgeries on the leg after suffering a compound fracture in a November 2018 game.
Smith threw an interception to 49ers cornerback Jason Verrett on the ensuing possession. However, the Washington defense responded when Chase Young returned a fumble by quarterback Nick Mullens 47 yards for a touchdown.
Smith then went to the locker room with trainers. Dwayne Haskins replaced Smith to finish the quarter. Haskins remained in the game to start the third quarter as Smith continued to test his injured calf.
As Washington tries to hold on to the lead to retain first place in the NFC East, concern shifts to their quarterback, Alex Smith.
