Dwayne Haskins was under center taking first-team reps in Wednesday practice for the Washington Football Team. Alex Smith did not participate in Washington’s first practice of Week 15 nursing a calf injury that is considered “day-to-day.”
Washington head coach Ron Rivera thought Haskins “looked good” in practice.
Smith injured his right calf, the same leg that was surgically repaired after suffering a compound fracture in 2018, in the first half of last week’s win over the San Francisco 49ers. He exited the game just before halftime and did not return.
Haskins replaced Smith the rest of the way in Washington’s 23-15 win. He finished the game 7-of-12 for 51 yards.
If Smith is unable to play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, then Haskins will start at quarterback. for the first time since being benched following a Week 4 loss.
Haskins started the first four games of the season before he was benched to third-string in October. His demotion led to him being inactive for four games, sparking trade rumors. However, Rivera has contended he had not quit on the 23-year old.
Haskins was promoted to backup following Kyle Allen’s season-ending ankle injury. Now, he may get the opportunity once again start for Washington.
