Washington reportedly placed waiver claim on RB Dontrell Hilliard

Antonio Gibson’s toe turf injury appears to have the Washington Football Team searching for running back depth. According to Ben Standig of The Athletic, Washington placed a waiver claim for running back Dontrell HIlliard before he was awarded to the Houston Texans.

The Texans were ahead of Washington in the waiver priority order. The former Tulane standout was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Monday after three seasons. More importantly for Washington, placing a claim for Hilliard may be a hint towards Gibson’s status.

Gibson, who leads Washington with 659 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, suffered the toe injury in Week 13 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He missed last week’s win against the San Francisco 49ers. JD McKissic and Peyton Barber split the bulk of the carries in Gibson’s absence.

The two combined for 23 carries for 105 yards, but Washington’s offense never got in a rhythm and did not score a touchdown in the 23-15 win.

Washington elevated undrafted rookie Javon Leake from the practice squad. Yet, he played just six snaps on special teams.

Turf toe can be lingering, especially for a running back. More about the status of Gibson will be known when Washington begins its practice week Wednesday for the Seattle Seahawks.
