Washington elevates QB Steven Montez adding uncertainty at backup QB

The Washington Football Team has elevated rookie quarterback Steven Montez from the practice squad along with running back Michael Warren for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Montez’s elevation comes on the same day, Washington signed quarterback Taylor Heinicke to the 53-man active roster from their practice squad. Along with Dwayne Haskins, Washington expects to have three quarterbacks active for Sunday’s game.

Haskins will start as Alex Smith has been ruled out with a right calf strain. With both Heinicke and Montez expected to dress it’s unclear who will serve as the primary backup.

When asked on Friday, Rivera didn’t reveal who would be the primary backup to Haskins.

Montez has been with Washington since going undrafted in April’s draft out of Colorado. Heinicke signed with Washington practice squad on Dec. 8. However, he has more familiarity to both head coach Ron Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner.

Henicke played two seasons in Minnesota (2015-2016) with Turner as his quarterback coach and a third in 2018 with the Carolina Panthers with Rivera as head coach.

Nonetheless, Sunday would be the first active game for both Henicke and Montez, this season.
