Washington can clinch NFC East division title in Week 16

The Washington Football Team remains in first place of the NFC East despite their loss to the Seattle Seahawks this week. That’s thanks to the New York Giants losing 20-6 to the Cleveland Browns Sunday night. Now, Washington has a chance to clinch their first division title since 2015 next week in Week 16.

With a win at home against Ron Rivera’s former team, the Carolina Panthers and a Giants (5-9) loss at the Baltimore Ravens, Washington (6-8) would clinch the NFC East division title and lock up the No. 4 seed in the NFC.

Washington’s loss to the Seahawks assured the champion of the NFC East would not have a winning record this season.

Despite the scenario, the Giants with a win and a Washington loss would overtake first place in the division and control its own destiny heading into Week 17, the final week of the regular season. The Giants hold the tiebreaker against Washington for sweeping their season series.

With that said, Washington could end the race for the division title next week for all it’s worth.

The focus will be on the health of the starting quarterbacks for both Washington and Giants heading into Week 16. Dwayne Haskins started under center for Washington against the Seahawks, as Alex Smith missed the game with a right calf strain. Following the loss, Rivera said Smith will be the starter against the Panthers, if he is healthy.

Giants quarterback Daniel Jones missed the game against the Browns with hamstring and ankle injuries. Colt McCoy started in place of Jones, whose status is unknown for the Ravens game.
