Russell Westbrook needed only three quarters to get triple-double in Wizards debut

Russell Westbrook is synonymous with triple-doubles. So, it was fitting he wasted no time treating his new team to one of his specials.

Making his debut with the Washington Wizards, Westbrook recorded his 147th career triple-double in less than three quarters. He becomes the first Wizards player to record a triple-double in his debut — and sixth player in NBA history in a team debut.

He finished the game with 21 points, 15 assists and 11 rebounds. Unfortunately for Washington, it was not enough to get the win, as the Wizards fell 113-107 to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Westbrook’s impact on the team while on the floor was evident. He logged in a plus-10 rating. The Wizards’ intensity on defense was clear with him on the floor, although he often times sunk to the post to gobble rebounds.

If there is area to improve, it’s Westbrook’s shooting. He shot a subpar 9-of-22 from the field, including 0-of-2 from three. There is no question Westbrook impacts the game in multiple ways. But as the season progresses he will need to improve his shooting.

Bradley Beal had a game-high 31 points on 11-of-22 shooting. Davis Bertans added 14 points off the bench. However, the 76ers countered with Joel Embid’s 29 points and 14 rebounds. Ben Simmons, nine rebounds and seven assists. Reserve Shake Milton added 19 points off the bench.

Despite the loss, Westbrook’s debut fit the billing of the Wizards this season. There was a new jubilation about the quality and effort the Wizards presented Wednesday night in Philadelphia. After two disappointing seasons, the season opener displayed many positives moving forward for Washington.
