Henrik Lundqvist announces open-heart surgery ‘went really well’

Henrik Lundqvist is recovering from open-heart surgery. The goaltender announced on social media, the Wednesday the procedure lasted about five hours and “went really well.”

The surgery was for an aortic valve, aortic root and ascending aortic replacement.

Lundqvist signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Washington Capitals this offseason after 15 seasons with the New York Rangers. The 38-year old was expected to split time in net and mentor second-year goalie Ilya Samsonov However, Lundqvist announced he was opting out of the 2020-21 season in December due to the heart condition.

Meanwhile, the Capitals signed 39-year old longtime Senators goalie Craig Anderson to a professional tryout contract in the aftermath of Lundqvist’s opt out.
