Since exiting a Week 14 game before halftime, Alex Smith has been hampered by a calf injury that was described as a calf strain. However, the Washington Football Team quarterback says the injury was “more complicated” than that.
Smith didn’t elaborate any further details. Yet, he insisted the injury was unrelated to the devastating leg injury he suffered in 2018. The latest injury being on the same leg was a mere coincidence.
Nevertheless, it adds to the struggles the 36-year old quarterback has faced the last two years.
After returning to the field to play football again this season, Smith led Washington to their first NFC East division title since 2015. While Washington won the division with a 7-9 record, Smith was 5-1 as a starter.
His remarkable comeback is arguably the greatest ever seen in the NFL. But the season ended on a sour note. He was relegated to sidelines to watch Saturday’s playoff game instead of playing due to the calf injury.
Washington was eliminated after losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-23 in the wild card round. Smith called not being able to play “really difficult.”
Now, Smith will mull over his football future with his wife and kids. The rest of the world may be in the dark of how complicated his calf injury is. However, it will presumably play a part whether he retires or comes back next season.
