Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith and his wife Elizabeth sat down with Norah O’Donnell of 60 Minutes on CBS. In the interview O’Donnell revealed Smith suffered a bone bruise on his surgically repaired leg that kept him out of last week’s playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“The day after he helped Washington clinch the NFC East and a spot in the playoffs Smith was sore and needed some physical therapy. He had missed the prior two games because of a bone bruise, on yes, his salvaged right leg.”
That’s much different than the calf strain the team labeled on the injury report.
Last week, Smith acknowledged his injury was “more complicated” than a calf strain. However, he did not elaborate any more details.
Smith went 5-1 as a starter this season for Washington. But he missed two games late in the season before returning in Week 17 to led Washington to an NFC East-clinching win over Philadelphia.
Unfortunately, Smith was sore the day after the game and never was able to feel comfortable to play in the wild card round game against the Buccaneers.
How significant is the differences in the injuries is unclear. What’s more concerning is the injury was to the same right leg that underwent 17 surgeries to repair from a compound fracture his suffered in November 2018 and fight the sepsis infection that ravaged through his leg.
